The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

As I enter the space, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after the conversation. This serves as a powerful symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and natural ability convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his path in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred local club Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

However, the famed academy – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the academy. They prevented me from returning home,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Season and European Arrival

This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are notable assets. He admits a need to control his aggression, after being shown red early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I am very at ease here,” he insists. However, he's often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it instills confidence.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the game.
