Former President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that he has extended an invitation the family of a Guard member killed last week to come to the White House.
He added that he spoke to her family and they were “deeply grieving”.
US army specialist Sarah Beckstrom, twenty years old, was killed in a violent incident on last Wednesday in DC.
Her colleague, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four years old, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Gatherings across the state have occurred in their remembrance.
The commander-in-chief stated he’s talked about a White House visit for the loved ones of both members of the state Guard.
“I told them: ‘When you’re prepared, because that’s a tough thing, come to the White House. We’re going to honor Sarah,” Trump informed reporters. “And similarly with him, whether he recovers or not.”
Attendees gathered over the past few days at Webster County high school in the state to remember Sarah.
Both she and Wolfe had been working with the West Virginia National Guard as part of Trump’s government program to assist policing efforts in the capital.
“Sarah was the individual that teachers hoped for. She carried herself with calm resilience, a contagious smile and a optimistic attitude that encouraged those around her,” Jarrod Hankins, the principal of Beckstrom’s alma mater, informed the Associated Press. “She was caring, compassionate and always ready to help others.”
Memorial plans for Beckstrom are in the process of planning.
Authorities have charged a twenty-nine-year-old suspect with a charge of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder while armed.
The tragedy led the government to suspend asylum processing and cease granting visas to owners of Afghan passports.
Wolfe, a native of Martinsburg, enlisted in February 2019 and is a 2019 graduate of his local high school, per the news agency.
He continues to receive treatment and is “fighting for his life”, West Virginia governor Morrisey stated on Fox News Channel’s The Sunday Briefing.
Attorney general Bondi informed the program that she planned to visit his relatives.
Beckstrom, from Summersville, graduated from her high school in June 2023 and began her service not long after, working as a MP with distinction, per the state guard.
“She had a lot of goodness and she absolutely had courage,” Morrisey addressed the crowd at the service. “Though her time ended too soon, she has created a legacy that’s going to last forever.”
