Israelis have gathered around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The incident saw in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel responded by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our aggressive enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not create a risk to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The government authorities postponed official remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred around the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was observed around the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the plan.

A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the negotiations revealed that an evening round of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative stated the earlier meeting ended without tangible results, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the deal.

He noted that the talks are "tough and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the differences between the both parties.

Key Issues in Talks

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies distribution
  • Future governance of the region

Civilian Reaction

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member lived through the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "No place seems like home now and until all the hostages come back not a single person will feel safe."

"When we see everyone home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can commence recover," she added.

Outside the leader's home in the capital, people congregated to show their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be alive.

Protester a participant stated: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the abducted to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that around 70% of the population desire the war to end in exchange for the freedom of the hostages.

Gaza Situation

At the location of Nova festival, grieving people assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the noise of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the severe Israeli bombardment continued.

In the main city, bombardments were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the western district, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of the community, as well the camp to the north-west.

"When the dusk comes, the fear comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.

"We are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, embracing, particularly my youngest child who rests his head on me all night."

"Continuously we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will come back to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

The medical facility in the urban area said it had taken in the corpses of six people by the midday, including three killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of the city reported additional fatalities had been delivered. A person was died by Israeli troops while looking for aid to the southern area, health workers stated.

The territory's health ministry said twenty-five of the {territ
