Contaminated Shrimp Crisis: Indonesia Confronts Contamination in Major Manufacturing Zone

An extensive manufacturing zone situated in the suburbs of the capital is dealing with nuclear pollution following an official taskforce found traces of the hazardous element Caesium-137 at twenty-two manufacturing facilities within the area, which includes companies shipping frozen seafood.

Indonesian officials initiated an investigation when the American FDA identified Caesium-137, a radioactive substance, in a consignment of chilled coated prawns sent by an Indonesian company.

The FDA released an advisory instructing suppliers and sellers to discard the product and not sell it, although the found amount was well under the agency's action limit. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had detected would not pose an immediate risk to the public.

The authority explained: “The primary health effect of worry following extended, repeated low dose contact (eg through consumption of contaminated food or water over a period) is an increased chance of cancer, caused by harm to DNA within body cells.”

Widespread Contamination and Health Examinations

Radiation tests showed at least 22 plants in the industrial area were contaminated. The official team did not name the 21 other production facilities, but confirmed they would immediately receive decontamination procedures conducted by the country's nuclear authority.

A senior official declared that people living in strongly contaminated zones would be moved until the site was cleaned, emphasizing that the well-being of the residents was the “main concern”.

Health officials also conducted examinations on nearby workers and people living close to the industrial estate, finding nine people who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. They were referred to a medical facility before being cleared to go back.

Cleanup and Containment Measures

The affected sites will immediately undergo cleanup operations by Indonesia's nuclear agency. Officials have further selected the area of a recycled metal plant as an isolation center for contaminated goods.

Indonesia, which has no nuclear energy facilities or weapons program, believes that Caesium-137 may have come into the nation from abroad.
