Biden Bowl, Anyone? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity

Passing on unwanted presents might be viewed as somewhat rude – unless it's done the right way.

A Charitable Sale

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell an estimated 270 presents received by her by international figures during her travels. The eclectic collection reportedly features objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

The collection, combined, are worth an estimated €800,000. The plan is to sold to the highest bidder by a Italian art dealer. A date has not been finalized, but the intention is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the revenue going to various charities.

Palazzo Chigi Treasures

The items are currently locked away in a storage room on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni additionally considering auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been stored away indefinitely.

The detailed catalog is yet to be disclosed, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when a detailed register of items received was presented in parliament. The question focused on if a rule restricting expensive presents was being honored. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents worth more than €300.

A Global Assortment of Gifts

Notable gifts feature:

  • A scarf from the leader of Albania, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a board, and several rugs from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the most unusual gifts included the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.

Diplomatic Context

Supporters have applauded Meloni, mostly from within her party, with winning over foreign leaders and positioning Italy as a significant player on the global scene once again.

This unique auction highlights a unconventional way to handle the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a political career.
