Astronaut Discloses Depression After ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the flight.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
